I’ve been around in the miles and points world for a reasonable bit, and I’ve done some convoluted stuff sometimes to maximise my miles & points, but I’ve never heard of someone handing out gold coins to get passengers. But amusing stuff does happen in the air travel business.

To celebrate their 25th Anniversary (read as, appeal to the love for gold in South India), Silk Air is offering up to two 4 Gram 24 Karat Gold coins for those who choose to fly SilkAir business class from India to Singapore or onwards. SilkAir operates from the following stations in India:

• Kochi (COK)
• Coimbatore (CJB)
• Trivandrum (TRV)
• Visakhapatnam (VTZ)
• Hyderabad (HYD)
• Bangalore (BLR)
• Chennai (MAA)
• Kolkata (CCU)

If you’re interested, read on. You have to purchase return fares (business class) on Silk Air (a Singapore Airlines associate) between 21 February 2014 to 28 February 2014, for travel between 01 March 2014 to 31 July 2014.

• Passengers travelling on SilkAir between India to Singapore get 1 Gold coin.
• Passengers travelling on SilkAir between India to Singapore and beyond to a SilkAir or Singapore Airlines destination get 2 Gold coins.
• Passengers travelling on Singapore Airlines between India to Singapore and beyond on a SilkAir destination get one 1 Gold coin.

You’ll get a redemption coupon at the check-in counter during your onward journey, based on eligibility.

Passenger will receive the redemption coupon at the check-in counter during their onward journey based on their eligibility, and you can get the coin/s only after completing the full trip.

Now, the reason I was amused was because this is potentially an INR 24000 Rs. cashback (assuming 24K gold at INR 30000 for 10 gms) on an INR 115000 ticket (lowest I checked), and you still get to earn the miles on KrisFlyer, and also get these two gold coins, which brings down the cost massively. And there are no upside caps as well.
