Uber updates from India + Promocodes

I haven’t written much about Uber recently, after my not so great experiences with them in Mumbai. From being a daily customer, I’ve now become a 4-6 times a month customer of sorts while I am in Mumbai. But they have been doing some great stuff in the other Indian cities they operate in.

First and foremost, Uber has launched UberX in India. Available in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi at the moment, UberX is the cheaper Uber, where instead of premium cars, they send you regular sedan class cars such as Maruti Swift Dzire or Toyota Innova your way.

Since for me I just need a car to go from place A to B, I am pretty happy with the smaller cars as well, since they are a significant saving on the pocket. For instance, I tried out UberX recently in Bangalore, and I billed INR 780 from Airport to the city centre, inclusive of tolls. As a comparison, UberBlack between Airport and City costs INR 2000 due to the flat fare structure. I got myself a clean Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire within 5 minutes and I was rolling.

Here are UberX prices around India, significantly cheaper than UberCar.

Chennai Uber

In Chennai, get one free ride to or from The Central Station and Egmore station with MADRASRAIL promocode, anytime until 31st August 2014. Also, if you are a new user, UBERMADRAS375 is the promocode to get INR 300 off your first two rides.

Hyderabad UBER SUV

In Hyderabad, Uber has also launched Uber SUV. If you are a new user, UBERSUVHYD is the promocode to get INR 300 off your first two rides.

American Express UBER India

American Express cardholders in India, who are new users to Uber are being offered two rides for INR 600 each. To get these rides, you need to sign up for an account with Uber, add your American Express Credit Card/Charge Card to your Uber Account, and add promocode AMEXUBER, which will make your first two rides for upto INR 600 free. Be aware, Amex processes as foreign cards while using on Uber in India, and you may be levied a forex surcharge on the use of your Amex with Uber. That has been my personal experience.

Mumbai UBER

UBER along with Indigo (the restaurant), is offering patrons of Indigo a chance to try out Uber. New signups with promocode UBERINDIGO get two free rides all through August 2014.

  1. Recently I used Uber from Bangalore Airport to Benson Town. They charged a flat rate of Rs. 2,000/- for a Uber Black car. Plus the Driver collected Rs. 150/- as toll charges. I would not mind paying this amount thought its significantly higher than what their competition charges for the same route, if they send a premium car but what I got was a Toyota Innova which was in run down condition. There was crow shit on the rear floor mat. The car was is horrible condition to say the least. I was utterly disappointed. I also tweeted the bangalore uber handle but they did not bother to reply at all. When I opened the app there was no option to select Uber X at all this was on July 26 2014. As is the case even for Uber Black car they are sending Toyota Innova’s and not as you mentioned premium cars only. I wonder what condition car they will send for Uber X customers.

    • @SS An Innova is a premium car as per Uber’s classification, so there is nothing we can do about it. As for UberX, it has been available in Bangalore since late June I believe. You should ask for a fare review using the website so that the Uber team comes back to you. The UberX I got was clean and well maintained.
