Hotel Review: Hyatt Regency Mumbai

Like I mentioned in this post, I really needed to get out of my house and get some downtime over the last weekend. So, I decided to check out the Hyatt Regency and the Grand Hyatt Mumbai over the weekend.

Hyatt Regency is an airport hotel, while the Grand Hyatt is the suburban hotel in Mumbai. While I have been to the Grand Hyatt a few times to attend events or grab a bite, it was the first time I was going to be over at the Hyatt Regency Mumbai.

I arrived at the hotel and went to the lobby check-in desk, where the hotel had a room ready for me. I was informed that I was booked in the base category room, but I was upgraded one category of rooms to the Club Room as a Diamond member. No line-up of benefits was provided as a Diamond member at check-in. The only question I was asked was if I wanted points or an amenity. When I enquired what was the food & beverage amenity, the front office did not know. I had no option basically but to choose the points.

When I arrived in my room, I realised from memory that the Hyatt Regency did not have club rooms as their highest level of rooms in the hotel. Rather they had Club Deluxe rooms which are the highest category. I called the Front Office, and the ensuing conversation was encapsulated in this post.

Here is how the Club Rooms looked. Basically, they are the regular rooms, but on Floor 1 and 2 of the hotel and with direct access to the Regency Lounge which is on Floor 1.

Shortly, an associate arrived to pick me up from the room to execute a room switch to the 4th floor, where I was going to be put up in a Club Deluxe Room. This room was far bigger than the earlier room, with a much larger work desk, and a much better view (of the pool). There was also space to keep a large couch in the room, which is always good to sit and work on with your laptop.

After moving to the new room, I went to the Regency Lounge for a while, to be able to get some work done. It was a very nicely done up lounge, with bright natural light flowing in. The hotel has a 24×7 Regency Lounge for soft drinks and tea/coffee, and they host breakfast in the morning and an evening cocktail hour as well. In the evening, we got a call to drop into the lounge for a drink if we pleased. I was thoroughly impressed with the lounge as well as the evening cocktail hour. The first win was that this was a 24×7 lounge as compared to the Hyatt Regency Pune which shuts down at night.

Here is some of the spread for the evening cocktail hour. It was quite a spread, and I spent quite some time there chatting up with some other guests.

While I loved their wine selection, I asked them to get me a Bloody Mary, and they made me a very nice one at that. Full marks to Adrenial who was around the lounge for taking good care of us while we were there. I hope I got his name right.

Next morning, I walked up to the GlassHouse, the all day dining restaurant where breakfast was being served. I was informed I could help myself to a full breakfast at the restaurant or a Continental breakfast in the lounge. The breakfast options were all the usual ones, including Cereal, bakery items, an egg station and hot Indian entrees amongst other stuff. We went with trying out the Paranthas and Eggs Benedict. While the Paranthas were very good, the Eggs Benedict were good (but not very good!).

I walked by the pool a couple of times, but I did not manage to get in, because it was a really hot afternoon.

I requested a late check-out which was confirmed to me over the phone, and I had the room to myself till about 2 pm. When I checked out, I was met by the Front Office Manager, who apologised for the confusion. I reiterated to him that this was not confusion but policy, and he assured me they would look into this aspect.

Overall, a very good stay for me, in spite of the initial hiccups. I wouldn’t hesitate coming back here again at a later time, as long as the hotel was willing to honour the benefits as per Hyatt Gold Passport.
