Hilton HHonors is back with a flash sale until July 18, 2016 where Hilton members can buy HHonors points at 80% bonus. A minimum of 5,000 points need to be purchased to get the bonus. HHonors points are usually priced at USD 10 per 1,000 points. This mean that you can buy a total of 144,000 Hhonors points (80,000 points + 64,000 bonus) for USD 800 bringing down the cost of each point bought to approximately 0.56 US cents/HHonors point.
Hilton was running the same promotion in February this year, where I had done a detailed analysis across all Hilton hotels in India to understand if it was really worth buying Hilton points specifically for redemption purposes. Out of the 15 hotels that Hilton has in India, a reward night would cost a minimum of 20% more at 13 of them, than the published room rate at the hotels.
Though purchasing points under this offer does make sense for some Hilton properties, like the Conrad in Miami- Florida where a reward night during New Years would cost USD 280 vs the standard selling rate of USD 309. Similarly, there is great value to be had at the Conrad Maldives where cost for a reward night in December works out to USD 532 versus the retail average rate of USD 810.
Although Hilton has done better than this offering a 100% bonus purchase promotion just last month.
The maths may also work if you are considering longer stays however. For 5 night stays, if you are an elite member, you get the 5th night free, so the costs go down in those cases.
If you are thinking about purchasing points under this promotion in the next 3 days then I’d suggest you first think about where you would like to redeem your points and work out the numbers. Buying points may make sense if you already have an existing balance and need to top up some points to redeem an award you have been considering. Otherwise, I’m hoping the 100% purchase bonus will be back sooner than later.
