Last year, in August 2016, JetPrivilege introduced carrier charges as a part of a wider overhaul of the entire program. At that point of time, an amount of INR 200 upwards was added to redemption tickets on Jet Airways, to be passed on to Jet Airways. The chart shown is pre-GST Era, however, everything went up 18% on the day GST was introduced.

Now, for JetPrivilege redemptions on Jet Airways, these carrier charges are going to go up as of November 1, 2017. As per a notification from JetPrivilege, if you issue a new ticket or reissue an existing ticket as of November 1, 2017 onwards, you would incur the new charges. And the hikes are anywhere between 19% to 125%.

Here are the new charges for redemptions for the Indian subcontinent along with the changes in pricing.In domestic (within India) cases, redemptions carrier charges are going up 50%, while on some redemptions which are within the region, such as Delhi Colombo, it goes up 40-44%.

Here are the new charges for international redemptions. Since this pricing is for 9W metal only, some of the changes are more there just for the record. For example, to my knowledge, there is no Jet Airways international flight which operates in the 0-500 bracket. They almost always start from the 1001-2500 miles flown bracket. Here again, the adjustments are across the board 20-50%.

I’m not aware what causes the prices to go up, given that ticket prices are at an all-time low, but clearly, a bulk of these charges are going to Jet Airways. Having said that, I still see the value in redeeming for premium cabins here where the value is far more than the not so high charges, as compared to, for instance, BA where the fuel surcharges are 300$ sometimes.

Bottomline

While more money on redemption tickets is almost never a good idea, given people consider them to be free tickets, I’ll try and find out more about what causes the rise as well, but for now, what you need to know is that if you have any travel plans which you think you can ticket right now for a redemption, go for it within October 2017 to save yourselves the extra money.
