Uber updates from India + Promocodes

I haven’t written much about Uber recently, after my not so great experiences with them in Mumbai. From being a daily customer, I’ve now become a 4-6 times a month customer of sorts while I am in Mumbai. But they have been doing some great stuff in the other Indian cities they operate in. First and foremost, Uber has launched UberX in India. Available in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi at the moment, UberX is the cheaper Uber, where instead of premium cars, they send you regular sedan class cars such as Maruti Swift Dzire or Toyota Innova your way. Since for me I just need a car to go from place A to B, I am pretty happy with the…

My discussions with Uber Mumbai

A couple of weeks back I posted about the Uber Mumbai debacles that have been happening all over the place. It did not look like I was the lone fellow who was affected by the downward spiral of one of my favourite technology companies. There were others too. Anyhow, the GM of Uber Mumbai called me up one fine day to discuss the issues I faced. My first question was how did they get my phone number, and why did they extract it from the database without my permission. No answers there. We decided that we should catch up sometime face to face to be able to take this discussion forward. Since Uber had stood me up one time before,…

Why Uber may self-decimate in Mumbai?

It is no secret that I am an Uber fan. I’ve admitted as much in the past. I’ve used their services in various parts of the world, but most of my interaction with them has been based in Mumbai and Delhi. And lets say 70% of my rides with Uber have been in Mumbai, 20-25% in Delhi and the rest elsewhere. While I can compliment Uber for running a great show in Delhi, I think they will sooner than later be self-decimating in Mumbai. Uber likes to be known as a technology company. Hence, they claim they operate the backend of a network of cars across 100 cities, where I demand a car wherever I am, and the chauffeurs who…

The promo code for Chennai, which is valid for these 12 hours, is VOTECHENNAI, while for Mumbai, it is, VOTEMUM. You can add these promo codes mentioned above as a new or existing user of Uber. It is without doubt my favourite ground travel service at the moment, and Uber is spreading out fast in parts of India I frequent often. The first thing you have to do is to download the Uber app on your Apple/Android smartphone. The special promotion code to Uber in Delhi today, between 7 am to 7 pm, is VOTEDELHI. 2 Free Uber rides for LiveFromALounge readers

It is no secret that I am a Uber fanboy, if there is a term like that. I’ve been waiting for these guys to come to India and give us a little respite from the flagging a cab and waiting for a cab to come up. Ever since they’ve launched in Delhi and Mumbai, two cities I call home, I’ve seen myself in many of their cars, which include everything from a BMW X1 to a Mercedes E-class to a Toyota Innova, but not the broken 20 year old Mumbai cabs for the least. The pricing is slightly high, but the money is worth it. In my numerous trips from the Airports recently, I’ve largely tried and used Uber to…

Uber launches in Mumbai & offers 2 free rides

Uber has been going around India and I have been keenly looking forward for their launch in Mumbai, the city I call home now. The good news is, they just went into Secret Uber phase today, which means they have launched a few cabs in Mumbai already. While I write this post from my first Uber Mumbai ride, which is an uneventful Toyota Innova, the fares seem very competitive at least at this stage (they may go up later). The base fare to start the trip is INR 100, and you pay INR 17 per kilometre and INR 2 per minute of the ride. This is cheaper than Ola Luxury for sure, which I previewed recently. At this moment, they…

Uber launches in Chennai + last day for double referral signup

While I’ve been waiting for Uber to come to my city of Mumbai, Uber has gone ahead and launched in Secret Uber mode (Beta) in Chennai last evening. This is the fourth city they’ve launched in India, which means Mumbai does not get the privilege of Uber in January 2014. The other cities are Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad. Here is how my first experience with them went in Delhi. Now, Uber in Chennai can be ordered via the smartphone app for iOS and Android phones, and all you need is a credit card number fed into your phone app to be able to bill the rides to, since Uber works cashless and you don’t have to pay when you release…

Register for Uber to get 200% startup credit extended till 31 January 2014

Uber has been offering a generous double referral for new referrals for new signups for most of January 2014, and they extended this promotion till January 31, 2014. If you haven’t tried out their services yet, and you live in one of the 26 cities they operate in right now, maybe this is a good time to at least sign up, because you would get yourself double the referral amounts in your Uber account, from what is usually offered. For instance, a new account in the USA will be credited with $20, in UAE with AED80, in India with INR 600, in Hong Kong with HKD 140 and so on, which is double from the usual amounts. And you don’t…

Why you should sign-up for Uber this weekend?

Uber has been offering a pretty generous double referral for new signups for the past ten days or so, and will continue to do so till January 20, 2014.
