JetPrivilege 20% discount on redemption pulled for international sectors

If I earned 1$ for everytime I picked up a mistake Jet Airways makes, I’d be a millionaire by now. A few days ago I wrote about the very generous Jet Airways redemption offer where all redemptions on Jet Airways metal, made online, were going to be priced at a 20% discount on miles. This offer was made to tie-in with the recent enhancements of the Jet Airways JetPrivilege program.

As a part of the offer, all JetPrivilege redemptions made using the website jetairways.com would attract the discount. The offer page as well does not limit the benefit only to domestic flights (see screenshots below):

For the first few days you could book tickets to go on international sectors with the discount as well, but this got pulled a out somewhere on the 30th/31st of March 2012. As a result, if you look for a booking on miles on the international sectors of Jet Airways such as BOM-SIN, you’ll now see a complete 20,000 miles o/w whereas earlier you’d see 16,000 miles (last week).

Since Jet Airways just pulled the discount without any notification, I sought a formal reply from them to tell me no more international redemptions available. It took them a full day to revert on Twitter. This is the second tweet I sent them on this topic:

On the other hand, domestic segments still continue to get the discount. When I started to hunt out for the T&C, I could not find this new deal of 20% offer on domestic segments only. However, today, 3rd of April 2012, Jet has finally revised the offer formally as well. So the website now reads…

Also, what has been changed retrospectively is the validity of the offer period. Earlier on, you could book by 30th Sep 2012 for any date ahead (no travel date restrictions) However the travel dates for this redemption are now limited to 30th Sep 2012. So, you should see this redemption below, where you’ll need to redeem 8400 miles on the outbound in Y if you went on Sep 30, 2012 and 10500 miles on the return (in Y) on your Oct 1, 2012.

The part that is most frustrating with these ongoing ‘tweaks’ is that you cannot ever be sure you are making the right assessment of the situation. I was ready to pull the trigger on a ticket redemption to Europe but held it back because I needed to check with everyone else going to align the dates.

This is the nth time they’ve improvised on their feet, and this necessarily means that the airline raises hopes of its frequent flyers and then dashes it down when you don’t get what you were offered. Yes, it means more revenue seats on Jet Airways international, but it also means some more ill word added to their already known perception as a miser in terms of award bookings.

Jet Airways, you need a good copywriter, and if you can’t find one, just send your emailers to me for proofreading and I’ll do it for you for free. At least, it will save the rest of the 1.4 million JP members some serious heartburn!
