Sunday Plastic: Jet Privilege HDFC Bank World Credit Card

Last week, HDFC Bank and Jet Airways finally announced the details of their co-branded credit card, which was initially announced on 13th July 2012. The new JP co-branded credit card will come in 3 variations: World, Platinum and Titanium. Here is a review on the World Credit Card, which is the top-tier credit card from this tie up. HDFC Bank is currently offering this card product on the MasterCard platform only.

Sign-up bonus: On signing on for the card, you will be offered 5,000 JP Miles (first swipe within 90 days), another 5,000 JP Miles on spend of Rs. 75,000 (within the first 90 days), one complimentary base fare waiver domestic ticket code (fuel surcharge and taxes to be paid) and 1 voucher of Rs. 750/- for a round-trip booking on Jet Airways / Jet Konnect domestic.

Fee: The fee is INR 2,499 per annum, plus taxes. You get 10,000 JPMiles on sign-up, and 4,000 JPMiles on renewal. For Platinum tier members of Jet Airways, you get the credit card free of feestill you retain your Platinum Tier on Jet Airways. Also, if your spend Rs. 3,50,000 on the card in a particular year, you get it free on renewal.

Eligibility: Not publicly disclosed.

Features: The Jet Airways HDFC Bank World Card makes you eligible for priority check-in on Premiere (business class) counters while flying Jet Airways/ Jet Konnect and allows for an extra baggage allowance of 10 Kgs while flying Jet Airways (full service) domestic. If you are a Jet Airways frequent flyer, you can make use of the 5% off (on base fare+fuel surcharges) Jet Airways coupon code (JTHDFC) to book revenue tickets on Jet Airways / Jet Konnect for your domestic itineraries. One of the more interesting features of the card is Tier Point you can earn every time you spend Rs. 2,00,000 on this card.

You also receive a complimentary Priority Pass, the $99 version, where you need to pay $27 for lounge access per visit to an affiliated lounge. By virtue of this being a MasterCard product, you also get access to select lounges across India under the MasterCard lounge access program, valid till December 31, 2012 at present. You can refer to my earlier post on MasterCard Lounge accessfor more details.

Earning JPMiles: Spending on this card earns you 6 JPMiles everytime you spend Rs. 150. If you spend on booking Jet Airways tickets via the Jet Airways website, then you get 3x JPMiles, i.e, 18 JP Miles per Rs. 150. I wonder why this is only valid on website purchases, I would love to see the Bank extend this to walk up purchases on Jet Airways counters as well.

Also, unlike other products, the credit card does not earn you pro-rated miles for your purchases under Rs. 150, meaning, for the Rs. 100 coffee you pay at the airport will get you no miles.

Redeem JPMiles: Redemption of JetPrivilege Miles can be made on Jet Airways metal or Jet Airways partner airlines under the standard T&C of the JetPrivilege program. Jet Airways attracts a fuel surcharge on international segments which can be hefty – for instance $500 on a roundtrip from India to USA. However, domestic segments have very less fuel surcharge. Also, for travel till September 30 2012, you have the opportunity to redeem JPMiles for domestic itineraries at 20% less.

Overall assessment: The HDFC Bank Jet Privilege World MasterCard is a competitive product, and one of the only ways you can earn JP Miles on credit cards at the moment, unless you want to spend on other cards and convert the lousy points you earn into miles. However, it is not AS good as the earlier version which Jet Airways had with Citibank. Upgrade instruments are not coming along, which is clearly a move to protect Jet Airways from giving away too many upgrades. However, going by the comments on this post, JP members seem to have loved it and they clearly miss the vouchers on this new card.

  1. @Ajay: Interesting. I was under the impression the version of Priority Pass offered with most of these cards was the lowest variant- where you had to pay $27 for each visit to an affiliate lounge.

  2. By any chance- do you know how many lounge visits are offered per quarter/year under this card? I went through the HDFC/Jet websites and I can’t seem to find a number mentioned.

    • @aditya 5 on the priority pass per annum. No idea about the number on mastercard lounges but let me check

  3. Hi AJ

Regarding the HDFC-Jet credit cards, a rant from my side:

HDFC Bank Credit Card dept. seems to be gone to the dogs. 2 months and counting, haven’t heard anything from them on my card upgrade application (HDFC Bank says since i already hold a HDFC Mastercard world – i cannot be issued a new card but can only be upgraded). Email written to credit card folks in Bank is not even responded to!!! (And ironically enough, HDFC Bank classifies me as a “preferred customer”)
For upgradation they insisted on zerox copy of pancard, existing HDFC Bank credit card (when i am already their customer for last 6 years, they already have everything on their system – what’s the fun in collecting a pile of documents?). For fee waiver they initially asked a zerox copy of Citibank credit card. Later added that latest statement of Citibank credit card is also required!!! (This when I have an email from Jet stating that my first year fee is waived as I participated in the contest).

Actually in this process HDFC Bank has nearly disgusted me enough to move my savings account to a different bank!

The interaction with Citibank for Jet-Citi as well as Citi-Premier miles has been so smooth that HDFC is appearing like a jurassic age institution!

Is somebody from HDFC and Jet listening?

    • @YKS. I hear you. In terms of process HDFC will not deviate from it. Jet does not have a role to play here. so you should tweet to HDFC Bank and usually they get things fixed. I got my card with them pretty easily, but that was because they took all the documents from me the first time around itself

      • Hi AJ

I understand that Jet has no role in it. But Jet did have a role in snapping the Jet-Citi tie-up 😀

Glad you didn’t face any problems. Maybe this is a branch specific problem. These guys are completely clueless on the upgrade process.

  4. Dear AJ
The features of the card seem to be attractive.Does one go to HDFC bank or will they contact us after after getting our details from 9W???

  5. I was hoping that they allow customers the choice of opting for VISA or Mastercard. Since my Citi-PM (continued from Citi-JACC) is a Mastercard, having Visa in Jet-HDFC would have widened the prospects of lounge access. As such I already have a HDFC World Mastercard (by virtue of having a preferred HDFC bank a/c). It seems Mastercard has espoused me inexorably!
