Last Call: OneWorld Sapphire via American Express Platinum ends March 2014

One of the benefits offered by American Express Platinum Charge Cards in some markets, including India, UK & Canada has been Complimentary Cathay Pacific Marco Polo Gold Status. This equates to oneworld Sapphire status, which provides you with the following benefits:

  • Business Class Priority Check-in
  • Preferred Seating
  • Business Class Lounge Access with one guest
  • Priority Boarding

While this is not an advertised benefit, the reason for that is that this benefit is being withdrawn with effect from 31 March 2014. However, American Express has confirmed that for anyone who is holding the card or gets the card before 31 March 2014 and is able to get their completed form across for Cathay Pacific Gold, they will be able to honour this benefit for at least a year forward. At least in India, this is easily done by accessing their online portal for Platinum members at www.americanexpress.co.in/platinum as well. So if you are already an American Express Platinum Card holder and don’t have this status benefit, maybe you should get it now.

Last month, American Express had a wonderful promotion where they were offering INR 40,000 worth of Taj Hotels stay vouchers on sign-up, which made the decision a no-brainer to go for this INR 50,000 per annum fee card. I received my card within a week of application. I’ve filled up the forms for this benefit, and I am hoping this is activated soon. As per FlyerTalk, the INR 40,000 vouchers promotion is still available, but Amex will have to do some more paperwork at their end to be able to get these vouchers for you.

  1. Can you please write about your experience and cost effectiveness of Amex Platinum Charge Card, which you have been holding for past 2 years.

I will appreciate any first hand information from a card holder , as AMEX people are currently hell bent of dumping this card on me.

  2. Hi,

i just received my card and also accessed the platinum site, as suggested by you. However I am unable to find where exactly to apply for the Cathay Pacific Marco Polo Gold Status in the site.

  3. So I applied for it after I read your post. Good news is that they have agreed to extend the 40K Taj Voucher benefits to me. I expect to receive the card by 20th (+- 2-3 days. Do you think I will have sufficient time to apply successfully for the Cathay Pacific Marco Polo Gold Status?
