Daily Getaways might be a good time to purchase some IHG points

The US Travel Association works out promotions for the travellers every year, and offers 5 weeks of the Daily Getaways promotions. Now, a few chain hotels such as Hyatt and InterContinental Hotel Group, work with the USTA to offer packages of points for a good price. Hyatt offered a total of about 100 packages or so, which went out pretty quick (a few seconds). However, InterContinental Hotels Group offers a huge variety and 1000s of packages, some of which are still available.

Here are the various packages available in limited quantities:

  • 15,000 IHG Rewards Club points for $100
  • 25,000 IHG Rewards Club points for $167
  • 50,000 IHG Rewards Club points for $325
  • 100,000 IHG Rewards Club points for $630

Most of these packages are pricing IHG points at 0.63 to 0.67 cents per IHG Rewards Club point, which is cheaper than buying them even with the 0.70 cents per point trick, and at half the normal purchase price.

Ultimately, the restriction you have to bear in mind is that you need to have a IHG Rewards Club account already open, and a US of A address to be able to make use of this promotion. While American Express will get you a further 10% off, but non-US Amex cards won’t be able to go through.

Do remember, there are multiple ways to generate IHG Club Reward points, and even though they have only 21 hotels in India at the moment, they have some amazing properties around the world which can be had for better price with points than with cash. For instance, in Europe, the InterContinental Le Grand and the InterContinental Amstel are two properties which are amazing redemptions even at 50,000 points, because the going rate is over 500 Euros in peak season. Also is the InterContinental Bora Bora for an overwater Bunglow . Personally, I also love their PointsBreak promotions as well, where I have stayed at the InterContinental Marine Drive for only 5,000 points per night as well.

Pro Tip: Buy using your Citibank PremierMiles card and you could also get 8 PremierMiles/ INR 100 spent

  1. For better or worse, my understanding is that IHC doesn’t recognize status on award nights nor offer better rooms for more points, so no thanks.

  2. Hmmm, not convinced! You can buy IHG points when you need them via the 0.7 cents trick. They post immediately so literally no need to have them in your account 5 minutes more than necessary before redeeming.

With this deal, in return for a discount of 10% at best, you are spending your money now with no guarantee that you will use the points before IHG devalues them or launches an even more generous promo (they have done 100% bonuses on purchased miles before).

I will keep my $ in the bank and live with the fact that if I do need some more I’ll be paying 0.7c rather than 0.63-0.67c.

    • @Raffles yes, I do agree with that opinion as well. Personally, I think this is a good opportunity to stock up on some points, and I’ve gone ahead and picked some myself. I am not picking 100K over 15K or anything like that, and that depends on individual preferences.
