SpiceJet enhances meal service to encourage pre-booking

SpiceJet has been working on turning their airline around for quite a while. Some of the things include the launch of the new SpiceMax product, an On Time Guarantee, and new meal options with a new caterer on board.

Towards improvising their meal service even further, SpiceJet has made some changes to their meal service sequence as well. Remember, SpiceJet does not have meals included on board, but a buy-on-board concept.

From their website, they’ve added new service guarantees, where people who pre-order their meal on the website (while booking/using Manage my booking), will be served the meal they ordered, which should be a sitter. However, they will also be served first, which is I think a better proposition because then the cabin crew can get all the custom-marked meals out of the way, and then start selling the rest of the meals to all the other passengers on board who want to buy one.

Just as a reminder, you can pre-book meals up to 24 hours before departure of your flight, and you need to pay for it up front as well.

Not a big improvisation, but in the hospitality business I guess the small touches do matter.

  1. We were on a SpiceJet flight the other day and all they served were the pre-booked meals. They took so long to come around with food sales for the other passengers that my friend had to ring for service and ask 3 times before he could buy a sandwich and a meal.

Funnily enough, on the return we were booked on a JetKonnect flight under S2 code, which turned out to be a codeshare in the sense that the primary flight was a 9W with 3-digit flight number. We were served hot meals even though having booked on S2, we were not supposed to be entitled to them and were supposed to have to pay onboard. Just goes to show that the scrapping of the JetKonnect brand is all for the best.

(As a further twist, my JP number which was quoted at the time of reservation did not appear on my boarding pass and the desk agent was not able to add it on manually. He said it was because the PNR was S2 while the flight was 9W and so I would have to mail the JP centre with a copy of my boarding pass in order to have the flight credited.)

  2. Erm, my last spicejet flight was an year ago; but I got the same treatment that time. I had pre-booked a breakfast item online and got the same served up on a tray by an FA before the cart was even rolled up from the galley. 🙂
