Air India considering Premium Economy cabin?

Invalid request error occurred.

Air India has previously a failed experiment with domestic Premium Economy before, and the same experiment is on-going at Vistara at the moment on their all A320 domestic fleet. However, today’s newspaper reports that Air India is now perhaps exploring the installation of a premium economy cabin on some of their long-haul planes, following in the lines of many other airlines which have gone ahead with a Premium Economy cabin, mostly on their long-haul segments

Here is a small blurb from the Economic Times report today:

“We are looking at introducing a new cabin class, premium economy as we see the demand growing for this product globally,” a top Air India official told PTI.

However, clearly this is still a drawing-board stage idea, since Air India has done no groundwork on this, as shown by the following comment:

“We also have to evaluate the routes, domestic or international, before we firm up our plans,” the official said.

While this may be another failed experiment if they do this on a domestic sector again, PE is a big hit on international segments, especially when done right such as British Airways or the upcoming move by Singapore Air. Also, I hope Air India does a genuine Premium Economy cabin rather than spacing out some seats and making an Economy Plus and calling it Premium Economy.

Anybody want to guess which of the so many airplane makes and models from Air India will get this cabin class first, and when?
