Hotel Review: Hyatt Regency Ahmedabad

Hyatt Regency Ahmedabad opened their doors earlier this year in April 2015. Since they were offering an initial launch promotion of 3000 Hyatt Gold Passport points for stays made till June 30, 2015, I decided to make a quick trip to Ahmedabad, a city I hadn’t ever explored beyond work, and I hadn’t visited in the past year and a half. The trip was a quick overnight trip, but enough to give me a flavour of the city.

In the telecon with the hotel before making the trip, they informed me they had complimentary transfers for Hyatt Gold Passport Diamond members. I informed them of my flight details, and they had a car waiting for us at arrival. We arrived early in the morning at about 7 am at the hotel, and to our pleasure, they did have a room ready for us. We were informed that we were upgraded to a suite, being a Diamond member. The hotel has 4 category of rooms: Standard, View, Club Regency and Suites.

We arrived in the lobby, and were greeted by the staff, who informed us about the upgrade, got us to sign some quick paperwork and hand over identification. They then escorted us straight away to our room, and left us to ourselves.

The suite was the Regency Suite King, about 758 sq. feet in size and with a separate living room. The Suite still had a fresh paint smell about it, and was done up in a very minimalist fashion. The living room had a long couch and a bunch of shelves along with a big flat screen television in the middle.

On the side, there was a work desk, along with the coffee machine and minibar set up right behind it.

The bar area was well stocked with water bottles, and an electric kettle along with a coffee machine which got you Nespresso. The minibar was stocked with tons of soft beverages (since Gujarat is a dry state!).

We also had a welcome card and some treats waiting from the hotel on arrival (sweet and savoury), and these were fresh and very very nice.

Over at the bedroom, there was a nice queen bed, and a couch with an ottoman, but with the most sweeping view of the Sabarmati river which the hotel overlooked. From the 8th floor, this was wow, and we spent a lot of time looking out of the window when it was still daylight and we were not doing anything else. The view was so calming.

The bathroom, which opened on the right side of the bedroom, was done up in an elegant fashion as well. There was a soak tub, and separate basins for him and her. Alongside, there was a separate shower area.

The hotel had stocked up with Biotique amenities, which I have heard great things about, however I don’t personally like them.

We went to bed since we were awake all night to make sure we make our flight. Once we woke up, we headed down to the Chai Shop in the lobby, which was their all-day dining cafe doubling up as a lounge since the Regency Club had still not opened up. We ordered for some tea which was complimentary for us, and we were served in a nice traditional kulhad (earthen glass), along with an Indian biscuit. They had a whole wide range of teas to choose from, and we frequented this place two-three times during our 36 hour stay at the hotel.

For breakfast, we headed to the Tinello, their Indian/Italian restaurant which had breakfast set up every morning. There was a selection of items on the buffet such as cereal and cold cuts, but most of the items were prepared fresh and presented on your table.

For instance, I tried the chilla which was delicious. I ordered for a repeat in fact.

We also walked by the pool, which was a very impressive pool, but in the very hot sun of Ahmedabad in June, it was a no go for me.

There was some confusion however about the free car, because on check-out we were informed about an INR 1500 or so charge for the car which arrived to pick us up. When I informed them about the earlier conversation with the crew before arrival, after a lot of hesitation, they removed the charge, but did it in such a way that I did not get points for that much amount that they debited.

Overall, a good hotel, but away from most activities in Ahmedabad. However, I was just an Uber away from anywhere I wanted to go. If you want to be in the hotbed of action, there is also the Hyatt Ahmedabad, which I am hoping to try the next time I make a stay there.
