Last year, Air Vistara announced the launch of in-flight IFE on their network, to be based on a technology where you can bring your own device and stream the content inflight over wifi. However, they only have one plane running with the wifi network at the moment, VT-TTB, and we reviewed the service earlier this year.
Jet Airways made an announcement about a wifi based in-flight entertainment product as well. And now, we hear, this is live as of today.
One of my old complains with Jet Airways on the domestic network was the fact that even on planes with seatback screens fitted, they would not operate IFE on domestic flights. This changes everything. All you need is a portable wifi device, such as a smartphone, or a tablet, or your laptop. There is over 220 hours of content, including movies and TV shows, and at least a 100 content options to choose from. Add in a 3D flight tracker as well.
You need to put on your wifi on at 10,000 feet, or whenever the announcement is made that the content is available. Then, select the JetScreen option on planes where it is available, and head to jetscreen.jetairways.com (this website is not available on the ground, I already checked!). The service is complimentary and you do not need to pay anything to use the service on any device.
As of now, the service is available on 6 planes on the domestic network, and new planes are being added going forward. Ultimately, this system should also be useful when wifi internet is made legal to offer in India by the Government of India, hopefully in the next few days.
Bottomline
Ultimately, I am happy this has happened, because this shows the commitment that Jet Airways is making towards making a better product. Since they are my preferred carrier, it also affects me directly at all points of time. I’m hoping they grow this fast, and keep fresh content on board at all times, which would be great news for me!

Watched a movie on-board yesterday and worked like a charm. Was able to stream on laptop without the mobile app player.
Tried Jet Screen on 9W 353 from BOM to DEL yesterday. Enjoyed it 🙂
