Lufthansa brings the 747-8i to Mumbai, adds First Class

Lufthansa has been trying to upgrade their Mumbai-Frankfurt services for a long while, however, it has somehow not happened. Their 747-8i request was earlier denied because it was a clash with Emirates which upstaged them to bring an A380 for a short while, and then kept the slot in the process. Mumbai’s new Terminal 2 still used to have only one Code-F gate, which can handle planes such as the A380 and the 747-8i.

On the Frankfurt-Mumbai route, the airline used to operate the older Boeing 747-400 series aircrafts, but they have wanted to bring in one of their latest products to the Mumbai market for the longest times. Lufthansa has been operating the Airbus A380 on the Frankfurt-Delhi route since 2014 and the 747-8i on the Frankfurt-Bangalore route.

On the switch to the winter schedule on October 30, 2016, the airline finally managed to bring their new planes to Mumbai, and in the process install a 4-class service to Mumbai. The First Class service has been resumed as a result. The Boeing 747-8i operated by Lufthansa has 364 seats, and the following configuration:

  • 8 First Class
  • 80 Business Class
  • 32 Premium Economy
  • 244 Economy

Here is the schedule of the flight here on:

LH756 FRA1235 – 0100(+1)BOM 748 D
LH757 BOM0255 – 0720FRA 748 D

This should add another new product to Mumbai, and here is hoping now more airlines can bring their bigger planes to Mumbai given that now they have two Code-F gates. Maybe Lufthansa upgrades to an A380 sometime soon???

  1. Isn’t this interesting- 80 business and 244 economy seats.. Does India really have such a big premium market?

    • Amazingly (yes, I was amazed), they apparently do – the entire upper and lower deck of the 748i appears to be full on both the outbound and inbound days I selected to fly. (And many other days prior to and after…!)

  2. LH has always had First Class on their Munich flight, but soon that’s also going away as they are removing F on all A330s ex-MUC.

Good to see they have an option again on the FRA route – I was quite surprised to see this a/c listed when pricing tickets a few days ago…
