If you are an avgeek, a rock fan and have deep pockets, then here is an opportunity to own a piece of flying history, mixed with a slice of pop culture. Elvis Presley’s private jet will be auctioned this Saturday, May 27,2017.
The plane known as the ‘lost’ jet was custom made and designed himself by the later american singer. The price estimated for this 1962 Lockheed Jetstar Jet is between 2 and 3.5 million US dollars.
Furnished with its original cockpit , no engines and interiors of red velvet seats , marbled wash basins and red carpet flooring the jet has never been restored since its first purchase and is one of only 204 aircraft built between 1957 and 1978 in a collaboration between Jetstar and Lockheed. For more than three decades this Jet remains parked in an airfield in Roswell, New Mexico that houses umpteen number of retired planes.
According to the auction’s bidding website Liveauctioneers.com , this jet is the only remaining one of the three planes belonging to Presley which is still privately owned. The other two jets named Lisa Marie and Hound Dog II are owned by the Graceland estate in Memphis in Tennessee, where Elvis Presley is buried. The two jets remain there permanently on show for the fans touring the estate.
Well, according to the Telegraph, the King of Rock n Roll’s jet is not the only celebrity collectible up for grabs at the auction. Other articles up for auction are a selection of mysterious handwritten letters from Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and a pair of pink ballet slippers once owned by Madonna. There is also jewellery in the mix with a diamond and gold ring worn by Elvis on his last Hawaii tour, which he completed shortly before his death in 1977.
Various “lost” photographs of celebrities from James Brown, Ray Charles, Marilyn Monroe, Bing Crosby and Dolly Parton to Nelson Mandela, Tom Cruise, Madonna, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep are also said to be up sale.
This plane was said to be very dear to Elvis because of the co-ownership with his Dad. The jet’s current owner hopes that Priscilla Presley, the former wife of the singer might win the bid and reunite the trio at Graceland, the rockstar’s 14 acre mansion that is open for tourists.
