Singapore Airlines Business Class A380 2.0: Details of the new product

Singapore Airlines is updating the A380 look and feel of the A380 cabins, starting with the new A380s they are about to receive this month.

Today in a launch they have shared details of the new A380 cabin (we had them yesterday!) and the first one we know about is the new Skyroom Suites. However, the Business Class will join at the back of the Suites class to give the Singapore Airlines A380 a full premium-deck on the top-deck of the A380.

Singapore Airlines will have a new iteration of their Business Class seat installed on the A380. The first version was created for the B777 and then followed through on the A350s since 2013.

The newer version will have a distinct look and feel and lets elaborate on that below.

The colour scheme of the Business Class product is updated, and more burgundy than the rich browns the cabin has been used to in a long time. The seats are being upholstered by Poltrona Frau, just like the Suites Class.

Additionally, this is a more conventional approach where you do not have to flip the seat to make a bed, but can just slide down. The new A380 seats are 25 inches wide, hence smaller than the B777 and A350 versions.

While SQ has retained the 1-2-1 configuration, the news here is that all the seats are now aligned to the aisle so no seats get direct window access. This also allows SQ to put together some seats in the bulkhead to make double beds for a few. They have three of these in business class.

This happens thanks to a divider that can be brought down, and these being bulkhead seats, the feet do not have to go into a cubbyhole, hence making the double-bed comfort possible.

You can see below how the divider stays in various positions depending on if you’re travelling with a partner or not.

You get 78″ for your bed, which is good for Business Class. Underneath each seat, there are two compartments, one which can stow a full-size cabin bag, and another for your laptop bag or purse.

The IFE consists of an 18-inch screen which beams you the KrisWorld IFE and also comes equipped with USB sockets as well. The total cabin will be 78 seats (up from the 66 seats right now in the same space), however, each seat will have a pitch of 50″.

In terms of the in-flight catering, it looks solid. I’m wondering if there is this kind of space on their J Class tables or not 😉

Bottomline

While the new space saving is achieved thanks to the use of carbon-fibre on the shells installed for the seats (which should have also made it lighter), that is as much of the new innovation on these seats.

Having said that, it will be a different thing to fly the new business class and experience them for ourselves.
