HDFC Bank Diners Club 10X Rewards return through December 2019

We have written extensively about the HDFC 10x points. HDFC Bank Diners Club 10X Rewards were my favourite kind of reward currency primarily due to some offbeat transfer partners they provided in India. The transfer partner list went away in 2016, but still, I look at it as a 33% cashback card, with all the cashback going towards travel.

HDFC 10X Points

HDFC Diners 10X Rewards

The list of 10X partners frequently gets updated. The focus has been on travel & e-commerce. They initially put out a year-long list of partners, but then recalled it, and started to extend the date of the promotion by the months. Here are the announcements for AprilMayJune & July 2016. Then, it got extended through March 2017 but applied caps on reward earning per month, and a one-month extension through April 2017. In May, they put a new list valid through July 2017. Subsequently, they added all categories of SmartBuy on the list as of July 2017. They knocked off the travel category in late 2017. You can now access this category through SmartBuy which is for everyone who is an HDFC Bank Credit Card Holder.

HDFC Bank Diners Club 10X on Smartbuy

On August 1, HDFC Bank has confirmed that SmartBuy would continue through August 2019. This is in line with their previous line of thinking, where they extended the promotion through July 2019.

That means you could earn 10X points for the following activities with HDFC SmartBuy here on:

  • Flight Booking
  • Hotel Booking
  • Shopping via Flipkart & Amazon
  • Comparison shopping via the SmartBuy website.

The maximum number of reward points you can earn per cycle is 15,000 Reward Points for Diners Club Black and 5,000 for Diners ClubMiles, Diners Premium and Diners Rewardz Credit Cards. The promotion applies to EMI transactions on flights/hotels/Flipkart. These are over and above the reward points towards the usual 10X cycle every month.

HDFC Bank Diners Club 10X on Partner brands

For the 10X rewards via partner brands, there is a totally new list now revealed, and it is all over the place for now. Some old stars return, and then there are new ones.

This list would be valid from August 1 to December 31, 2019. The incremental 9X Rewards will be posted within 2 days from the date of settlement of the transaction. Date of settlement will be considered for calculating the maximum cap. The important change is that now a calender monthwise cap will be used, instead of the statementwise caps earlier.

For PayZapp, wallet transactions are not eligible for 10X Rewards. Smartbuy transactions paid via the PayZapp gateway will get the Smartbuy 10X and not the partner 10X.

Just as a recap, you earn the following points on your cards with the various variants on the merchants mentioned above:

  • Rewardz: 3 points/INR 150 + 27 points/INR 150 bonus [Total 30 points/INR 150]. Monetary Value is INR 9 [6% cashback]
  • Premium/Club Miles: 4 points/INR 150 + 36 points/INR 150 bonus [Total 40 points/INR 150]. Monetary Value is INR 20 [13% cashback]
  • Black: 5 points/INR 150 + 45 points/INR 150 bonus [Total 50 points/INR 150]. Monetary Value of INR 50 [33% cashback]
  • Here is the cap installed on the number of points you can earn per month for using partner brands.
    • Rewardz:  2,000 points
    • Premium/Club Miles: 5,000 points
    • Black: 25,000 points
  • Everyone can earn up to 25,000 Reward points for using the Smartbuy portal (such as those with Infinia).

The 10x points are not applicable to the HDFC Bank JetPrivilege co-branded Diners card.

The new omnibus here is the PayZapp account, which has many use cases. For instance, you can go shopping, order groceries via BigBasket, pay bills, book movie tickets and so on. This is especially great for bill payments which will attract a 33% cashback now on. This seems to work for rent payments as well, but I am still exploring more on that option.

What do you think of these changes to the HDFC Bank Diners Club 10X program?

  1. PayZapp as a tool to pay rent wouldn’t make sense right? Since bank transfers are charged at 2.8% + 18% GST, which effectively nullifies using PayZapp to pay rent and and getting any benefits from Diners rewards

  2. I have used dinners black card on Amazon multiple times via smart buy but no 10x reward points ever come to my card. I do the following steps:

    1) Go to smart buy and click on Amazon.
    2) Fill my details of card and phonenumber. [The page is then redirected to Amazon.]
    3) Search my product
    4) Add to cart.
    5) Pay via dinners.

What am I doing wrong in the process?
Is anyone else also facing this?

  3. Hi everyone

A noob question re. 10x points

If a DCB card holder were to do a Smartbuy transaction worth Rs 200,000; and use EMI option (for convenience, let’s assume 4 EMI of 50k each), then what amount of bonus points would accrue:

    1.
15,000 bonus points as Smartbuy benefit for one time only – based on the fact that the 2L transaction gives Max 15k points
    2.
15,000 bonus points for 4 consecutive months, as there are now 4 transactions of 50k

Pls help as I’ve got some big ticket expenses coming up

    Cheers

    Nomdeplume

    • Hi Aman,

You should get (50000÷150)=333×5=1650 base points plus 1650x10x=16500 (but capped at 15000 for DCB) so total 1650+15000=16650 RP for every EMI for 4 months once the EMI is posted to your statement. Total 16650×4=66600 RP.

2nd point in terms & conditions.
For EMI transactions, 10X reward points of SmartBuy will be posted month wise for the billed EMI amount

  4. 10x on diners black for flights/hotels/Flipkart is only if you do EMI transactions? Not if you do a down payment of the full cost?

  5. Thanks. But the booking is on holiday package!

@ Ajay – which card gives cashback / offer without entering any coupon code and direct payment on Yatra website ? I hold Amex travel ,Diners n ICICI sapphire card . TIA

    • Dont do it on Yatra website. I wanted to book flights and when compared total payable on both smartbuy & yatra, there was a difference of 1000 Rs Yatra being on higher side. Yatra charges 1000 Rs convenience charge on ticket value of 10K where as smartbuy charged only 236Rs. there straight saving of 800 & another 200 off from smartbuy when it automatically applies HDFC200 coupon on the final transaction value. And you get 10x points on 10K ticket effectively costing you only 7K.

      • Thanks. But the booking is on holiday package!

  6. Hi, just spoke to HDFC call centre. According to them PayZapp 10X are not posting as off now, they say there is some technical problem.

    • Exactly! I just got off the phone with them and came to this article to see if any others were facing the issue. Apparently they say utility bill payments on payzapp app are valid for 10X but the points are expected after 30-40 days due to some technical issue. Although they did assure that utility payments over payzapp are valid for 10X bonus.
I also queried about another transaction of May for which bonus points are pending. I bought iPhone XR through smartbuy-flipkart, that too is pending for some “technical issue” and is expected to resolve by end of this month.

    • This will be really helpful. A list of websites where PayZapp payment gateway is supported. Especially, shopping and Flight Hotel booking options where we can pay using PayZapp gateway.

In my limited research I did not find any.

  7. Thanks to your article and readers comments I can now use DCB with payzapp on my IOS device. Just made a utility payment. As per the new TnC bonus points will be credited within 2 days of settlement. So in a few days will know the actual outcome. Definitely going to max out on the 25K cap per month on partner offer if all goes through for the next quarter. These partner offers is the main reason I am avoiding to upgrade to Infinia.

  8. Dear Experts,

Does following action give us 10X smartbuy point on amazon!!!
    1) Click amazon smartbuy option enter mobile # and last 4 digit of CC
    2) It will open new Browser / Browser tab
    3) Generally search product which would like to buy, Lets example mobile phone
    4) It gives long listing of mobile products those available on amazon
    5) We select & click desire mobile from list which open another browser
    6) When click buy it will do buying formalities

We have browser / tab open at #2 and #5 from above sequence
If we complete purchase from #5 browser /tab then are we eligible for 10X reward points.

    Thanks for reading 🙂

  9. In cabs category Uber is not part of the updated list so for 10x rewards do we book cab through PayZapp?
If yes, then on clicking taxi my OLA app is triggered so do I need to use PayZapp everytime to open OLA to get 10x rewards?

  10. @Ajay: In your last point under recap, you mentioned “Everyone can earn up to 25,000 Reward points for using the Smartbuy portal”. Is this provided one has Infinia cc or would this be possible using Diner Black as well?

    • The reward points cap for Diners Black on SmartBuy portal is 15,000 for Diners Black and not 25,000 – which, as you rightly mentioned, is from Infinia.

  11. Need to try this method for ios.

PayZapp now accepts Diners Cards on Android, make sure you update the app.
You can’t add Diners on IOS yet, but there is a way. Just add it via Android app and it will reflect on your IOS too.

  12. Tried using payzapp>diners>bigbasket not working, BB callcentre says only payzapp wallet can be used not the cc option on payzapp. Wallet loads don’t count for 10x. Has anyone used payzapp successfully with BB for 10x on diners?

  13. Hey Ajay,

Big basket purchases thru the payzapp app will qualify under smartbuy or under the partner brands cap?
The reason this is not clear to me is coz on the payzapp app – Taxi, Movies and Grocery categories are listed under smartbuy.

    • Bigbasket has payzapp gateway, not working with diners yet.

All billpay etc are under payzapp, not smartbuy.

  14. Best part is utility bill payments are accruing 10x points when paid via payzapp ( tested myself with mobile bill payment)
