Marriott to discontinue awarding 10 Elite nights for events from January 2020

One of the easy ways to generate Marriott Elite nights used to be Marriott Rewarding Events. Each successful event used to give you ten elite night credits. It could be a meeting, a social event or anything in between. Back in the day, the number of meetings you could do this for was unlimited. This made it an easy way to generate elite nights and gain or regain Marriott Platinum status.

The Marriott Bonvoy programme discontinued this opportunity and started to only award the first event of the year with 10 Elite nights per year. You could still earn up to 60,000 points on every occasion before Platinum Status, and 105,000 points per event when you become Titanium.

Marriott has now decided that they will be discontinuing awarding elite nights altogether for any events from January 1, 2020, onwards. However, the ability to earn up to 60,000 points continues to stay. According to a copy of a note sent to me by at least two different Marriott people, which is yet to be published to Members, Marriott will be discontinuing the first-night award of ten elite nights but will continue to offer one elite night for every twenty rooms offered to members.

Marriott will be updating the terms & conditions of the programme shortly and send this update out to members. Like you can see, till the end of this year, all Meetings contracted will continue to earn ten elite nights for the first event, which is instant Silver status.

What this note leaves a lot to deduce is if there is a Member who has already contracted a meeting for 2020 under the current terms and conditions, how will they be treated in terms of meeting elite nights for next year, or not.

What do you think about the closure of this elite night earning opportunity by Marriott?

  1. For platinum challenge, let say if some one starts from November 2019, and completed on Jan 2020. Will he then get the platinum status for rest of 2020, 2021 and Jan of 2022. Also for platinum challenge do you need to hold gold status.

    • No. You don’t need to have any status to have a challenge . Me and my friend did same day and she didn’t had any status before it though I had my gold status through AMEX. I suggest take platinum challenge in the first week of the month so you get effectively rest of the days of the month plus 90 days.

  2. @ Ajay I did a small meeting at Fairfield Pune nov 20th with proper contract and got 10 elite night credit. It added to my titanium requirement as I don’t have much days to finish the requirement . In fact the whole meeting of 2 hour costed only 5500/- inclusive of tax. This was a good perks for those who like to have mattress run for retaining their elite status. Previously Marriott provided each eligible meeting 10 elite night credit. It seems like Marriott move more towards stringent way of retaining elite status. I hope soon they won’t remove platinum challenge also ! By the way thanks for your blog, I persued Titanium with in 5 months of joining marriot because of your blog coverage on Marriott benefits.
