A few weeks back I had written about the regulatory notification which modified the rules for the use of Personal Electronic Devices on airplanes while in flight and on the ground. Since then, I’ve waited for airlines to go ahead and execute the rules on the ground. I’m glad to report now it is no issue to use your electronics on board. Here is a collection of various domestic airlines and how they are implementing the rule at this moment: SpiceJet: SpiceJet was the first off the block. They claim they were the first to implement the revised rules, however they are allowing the use of PEDs/phones only above 10,000 feet even now. As per their COO, they don’t find…

SpiceJet introduces new meal options
Now, SpiceJet had been going downhill for a while, but they focussed on the basics and started to deliver on-time performance and clean planes again. They’ve also reworked the seats. Then, they added on-time guarantees, and now they are fixing up the food on the plane. While this should be a non-news, it is news because this is a part of their turnaround plan coming together. One of my troubles flying SpiceJet in my last life have been that the food was not too great. Trust me, I don’t need food on a small flight, but there are days I would get to the airport just in time for the plane, and eat on the plane. The good news then…
SpiceJet reconfiguring aircraft for more legspace upfront
SpiceJet has been in the process of a turnaround, and while the frequent sales have given them the cashflow, I’m hearing more and more good things from people about the better quality of their product in the past few months. Me, I quit flying them a year ago when they messed up badly on timing of flights, and a morning flight actually arrived late in the evening. But I’ll definitely give them a try after the turnaround is complete. In the meanwhile, it looks like SpiceJet is actually putting its money where the mouth is, and creating a differential offering for SpiceJet Max across its planes. Most planes, as per the COO Sanjay Kapoor, are under reconfiguration at the moment…
SpiceJet offers an On-Time Guarantee from today
SpiceJet, one of India’s low cost carriers, has been working pretty hard under the hood to go back up in the aviation game. When I last flew them, which was at least 15 months back, my flights were so horribly delayed and so tardily handled that I stopped flying them. However, since earlier this year, I have been hearing good things about various aspects of flying on SpiceJet. There has been a good On Time Performance posted for a few months in a row, and they have some good meals to buy inside the plane, and of course, all the sales they keep doing to bring in more passengers over to their planes. One of the new initiatives in this…
Selective Fare Sales on Jet Airways and SpiceJet today
Jet Airways has launched a fare sale today, valid for sale between 1 and 4 May 2014, and is valid on the following routes for purchase only via www.jetairways.com or their mobile app. It is an interesting motley of routes, including some popular routes including Mumbai – Goa. Do remember, the discounts are on 30, 60 and 90 day out flights, so don’t expect to find a discount on +1 day flights. You can travel on these special fares till September 25, 2014. Also, SpiceJet has a fare sale going on till May 2, 2014 as well. This time around, the sale is offering fares between INR 1899 and INR 1999 on many routes from the following cities: Ahmedabad, Belgaum,…
SpiceJet selling tickets from South India INR 1,773 onwards
SpiceJet is continuously promoting its new network, and after their sale around the country last week which just concluded, they have another one just for originating from South India. Since I did not have much time to post about this yesterday, I put out a tweet on this deal yesterday. You should follow my account on Twitter for deal updates when I can’t post about them immediately. The sale runs from April 8, 2014 to April 10, 2014 and offers some good fares for originating from Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Madurai, Rajahmundry, Tirupati, Tuticorin, Vijaywada and Vizag. There is Kolkata in the list as well, and I have no idea when did they move to South India. You can travel between…
DGCA asks SpiceJet to stop INR 1 tickets/ SG fights back
SpiceJet has been at the receiving end of undue attention from the Indian regulator for civil aviation (DGCA) for a while now. Last month, DGCA pulled them up for a little song and dance on their planes for celebrating Holi. Although the charges such as “The frequent movement of the dancing crew may have affected the aircraft’s centre of gravity during flight and created turbulence” were frivolous, DGCA stuck it out till it made the airline bend and commit that they’d ask for permissions before doing a similar thing in the future. Yesterday, I wrote about the SpiceJet sale for INR 1 tickets. While I could not locate tickets suiting my travel plans, many a folks did manage to secure…
Spicejet offering INR 1 base fare flights till March 2015
Another SpiceJet sale? I have seen a lot of these sales this year but this one takes the cake. SpiceJet has dropped prices to INR 1. The next slabs are INR 799 and INR 1499. Tickets can be booked between 1st and 3rd April 2014, for travel between 1st July 2014 to 28th March 2015. The discounts, as per SpiceJet should only be on the new flights introduced. However, they are pretty randomly scattered all over the place. Now, while the detailed terms and conditions say there is no fuel surcharge on the INR 1 tickets, the fuel surcharge is indeed being charged on the INR 1 tickets at some points (highlighted). Here are the T&C: The offer is valid…
SpiceJet gets into trouble for celebrating Holi on the plane
SpiceJet decided to be a little excited about the festival of colours, Holi, which was celebrated around the country earlier this week. Not a bad thought in its own right, except this attracted the attention of the aviation regulator DGCA who thinks they have not done the right thing by organising some song and dance on board. Here is a video of the dance on board SG 876 between Goa and Bangalore as captured by a passenger. The same performance was conducted on 8 flights of the airline on March 17. As per the airline, the cabin was staffed with three extra cabin crew members and the cockpit was manned at all times during this 2.5 minutes performance. However, the…
Upto 75% India airfare sales extend till Feb 27 and Jet Airways joins in
On Monday, I wrote about the sale that SpiceJet and Indigo sparked, where they offered discounted pricing on flights at least a month out. They called it “75% off compared to last-minute prices” however, I’d like to look at it more like a marketing gimmick, because who in their right minds would compare last minute fares to 30-day fares. The point is, there is still saving if you book now as compared to booking ten days down the line. The sale has now been extended by SpiceJet to 27th February 2014 midnight, as a response to Jet Airways coming into the fray. Indigo is in the fray as well, but no official word on if the sale is up till…
SpiceJet & Indigo 75% off between April 1 & June 30, 2014
This seems reckless and the way to the bottom, however, the airlines don’t seem to understand that. After a massive sale in January 2014 which SpiceJet started, and Indigo, GoAir, Air India and Jet Airways followed in that order, SpiceJet held its 30% off sale and is now up to its third sale in a month’s time. This morning, SpiceJet has put out a new sale, for the summer months of April 1, 2014 to June 30, 2014 where you get, apparently, up to 75% off (compared to last minute fares). Indigo has joined in as well. Here are some sample fares they’ve put out. I have validated a couple of these on random dates, and they are lower, but…
